Diane Ulmer Pedersen
Art has always been central to Diane's life. She began her first lessons, at the renowned Philadelphia Art Museum, almost before she could walk. Eventually, she would go on to more formal training and earn a B.F.A. from Denison University, located in bucolic Granville, Ohio. Diane began her career painting naïve portraits of children (sometimes real, sometimes fictional) while working at an antique and decorating shop.
Diane began experimenting with other art forms while researching her naïve portraits, and eventually incorporated a variety of these forms and techniques from 18th and 19th century folk art into a unique personal style that is instantly recognizable to art lovers throughout the country. Diane paints not only portraits, but landscapes and still lifes, as well. Many of her more celebrated pieces have been inspired from Bible verses, and Diane frequently draws on her faith to find inspiration for her artwork.
Applying acrylic paints to gessoed fiberboard, plastic laminate, wood, canvas, or paper, Diane has developed two basic styles: one resembling watercolors and the other, oils. The "oil" paintings incorporate layers of color and have a crackled finish achieved through a series of glazes applied over the artwork. Diane's work has been displayed in art galleries, designer showcases, schools and churches throughout the United States, and her paintings are regularly selected for inclusion in the Early American Life Directory of Traditional American Crafts.
Diane currently lives in Central Massachusetts with her husband, Peder, and "very lively son", Christopher.
